Society for Social Work Research (SSWR)

January 20-24, 2027

SSWR Special Interest Group: Social Work, Jewish Identity, and Judaism
2027 Co-conveners: Maayan Lawental, Ray Engel, and Corey Shdaimah

Jewish-identified scholars are exploring how their diverse religious, cultural, or ethnic identity(s) inform their historic and current social work research, pedagogy, and practice. Many find their loyalty to the profession in conflict with current discourses related to antisemitism and Jewish identity. This SIG will provide networking opportunities for those interested in identifying areas for research collaboration on practice with diverse Jewish communities, Jews, Israelis (of all faiths and ethnicities) and allies within the social work academy. The SIG will also foster mentorship relationships focusing on inclusion, belonging, publication, and tenure especially for doctoral students and junior faculty navigating their own identities as Jews and allies in academic settings.

Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) Annual Conference

October 22-25, 2026

Conference Track: Judaism, Jewish Communities, and Antisemitism in Social Work
Co-chairs: Corey Shdaimah and Dana Marlowe

The Judaism, Jewish Communities, and Antisemitism in Social Work track addresses critical gaps in social work education and practice related to Jewish populations and antisemitism. This track creates an inclusive educational space where both Jewish and non-Jewish social work educators can deepen their understanding of Jewish life, traditions, culture, and contemporary experiences in the United States.

The track aspires to create academic environments that embrace dialogue, reject antisemitism in all its forms, and uphold the dignity and rights of all individuals and communities. Our vision promotes social work education that values and integrates the experiences of Jewish communities while fostering collaboration among scholars to advance research, teaching, and practice.
